IELTS & TOEFL MARKING SCHEME
This page relates to how at Leila's Writing Lab I mark a student's writing practice and how I give your scores. These are the same marking criteria used by the IELTS and TOEFL writing examiners.

IELTS:
Task achievement, means to what level has the student satisfied the requirements of the task (answered the question completely) and whether the answer has been written in a well-developed manner (is it organized and logical).
Coherence and cohesion, means to what level has the student used appropriate cohesive devices (linking words / transition words / discourse markers) in a way that is correct. It also relates to how well the student has used paraphrasing techniques in their writing (saying something in a different way).
Lexical resources, refers to the accurate and sophisticated use of relevant vocabulary in the writing. Little mistakes are acceptable.
Grammatical range and accuracy, means to what degree has a student shown control of the English language with the use of simple as well as complex grammatical structures. Accurate use of grammar is very important here.
